What makes Eclipse so great in the top lane is its passive, through which you gain additional movement speed. Also, if you can hit an enemy with 2 auto attacks within 1.5 seconds you'll gain a shield and you'll deal bonus damage based on their max health. Pretty neat right?
So what makes this passive so good for top laners? Well, you play against beefy tanks a lot, right? And they have a lot of max health, right? Well, 6% of that will be dealt as extra damage which is insane! Not to mention you'll probably have an auto-attack reset in your kit and therefore have a whole lot of movement speed to either run away from or chase opponents.

Item Guide: Which Champions Should Build Eclipse?
If you really want to pop off on this item, we suggest picking champions like Riven or Xin Zhao, since they've got that coveted auto-attack reset we just spoke of. This means they gain a lot of movement speed – and hell Riven is already fast and can hop away quickly.

Also, Eclipse has some built-in Omnivamp which is also extremely nice to have on these champions. They'll be able to sustain and live extremely long in any fight. A fast Riven with Omnivamp? Well then, your win rate just shot up by a whole lot thanks to our Eclipse Item Guide... right?
