Riot just announced the new mage: Hwei. If you want to know all about his abilities and combos, we got you covered!

Hwei reminds me of Aphelios but with a twist – he's a mage. What's unique about him is that he has access to a total of 10 abilities. However, don't fret, he can't just throw all of them at you at once. He can only use a few of them together.

According to Riot, Hwei is designed as a mid lane artillery mage. But it's not out of the question that you might see him played as a support, in the bottom lane, or maybe even top lane.

Passive - Signature of the Visionary

  • Hwei’s damaging abilities against enemy champions mark them for a few seconds. Hitting marked enemies with another damaging ability creates an explosion underneath them, detonating after a short delay and dealing magic damage to all enemies in range.

Q - Disaster

  • QQ - Devastating Fire
    • Hwei paints a blazing fireball that flies out in the target direction. It explodes on the first enemy hit or at maximum range, dealing magic damage plus percent max health magic damage to all enemies in an area.
This Ability is like Karma R-Q without the second proc.
  • QW - Severing Bolt
    • Hwei paints a long-range, devastating bolt at the target location. After a delay, the bolt strikes, dealing magic damage. Immobilized or isolated enemies take increased damage based on missing health.

This is like Veigar W.

  • QE - Molten Fissure
    • Hwei paints a field of exploding volcanic eruptions, creating lingering lava in its path. Every eruption deals magic damage to enemies hit. Enemies in the lava area are dealt magic damage per second and are slowed.
This is like a Rumble Ult from Wish.
  • QR - Wash Brush
    • Cancels the current subject, returning to the Subject spells and consuming no cooldown or resources

W - Serenity

  • WQ - Fleeting Current
    • Hwei paints a current of swift waters in a line for a few seconds that grants movement speed to himself and allies.
This is like Jayce E, but rotated 90 degrees.
  • WW - Pool of Reflection
    • Hwei forms a protective pool at the target location that lasts for a few seconds. Allied champions inside the area gain an immediate shield, increasing in value over a few seconds while in the area.
This is kinda like Seraphine W.
  • WE - Stirring Lights
    • Hwei paints three swirling lights that circle him for several seconds. Hwei's next 3 attacks or spells deal bonus magic damage and grant mana on hit.
This is kinda like Nami E casted on himself with mana return instead of a slow.
  • WR - Wash Brush
    • Cancels the current subject, returning to the Subject spells and consuming no cooldown or resources

E - Torment

  • EQ - Grim Visage
    • Hwei launches a terrifying face that strikes the first enemy hit, dealing magic damage and causing them to flee for a brief duration.
This is Fiddlesticks Q as a Jinx W skill shot.
  • EW - Gaze of the Abyss
    • Hwei paints an abyssal eye at the target location that grants vision and locks onto the nearest visible enemy champion. After a short delay, the eye fires at the locked-on champion, rooting the first enemy in its path for a few seconds and dealing magic damage to them.
This is like Swain W, disguised as Maokai W.
  • EE - Crushing Maw
    • Hwei paints crushing jaws that deal magic damage to enemies hit and pulls them toward the center, slowing them by a set amount that quickly decays.
This is kinda like Swain E but vertical? I guess.
  • ER - Wash Brush
    • Cancels the current subject, returning to the Subject spells and consuming no cooldown or resources

R - Spiraling Despair

  • Hwei launches a vision of pure despair that sticks to an enemy champion for a few seconds. The vision expands and overwhelms all enemies it touches, dealing magic damage per second. Enemies within the zone are afflicted with stacks of Despair over time. Each stack of Despair applies a stacking percent slow. Upon completion, the vision shatters, dealing magic damage.

This seems like Viktor ult.

LoL New Champ Hwei: Combos

Hwei's ultimate and E abilities are crowd control (CC) abilities, so it makes sense to use them in combination with his Q abilities. His QW combo deals bonus damage when the enemy is under CC, making it a strong choice.

His W ability allows him to either support his teammates or enhance his own abilities.

In lane, it seems like the most effective poking tool for Hwei will be using EW followed by QW, possibly with a WE combination when there are minions around to block skill shots.

However, if there are no units blocking his skill shots, he might go for an EQ followed by QQ with a WE combo.

LoL New Champ Hwei: Runes And Item Recommendations

As for item recommendations, it's a bit tricky since we don't have all the details about the reworked items yet.

When it comes to runes, Summon Aery is likely the best choice as your abilities can both support your teammates and help with harassment.

For summoner spells, Flash and Teleport are usually solid choices, but Ghost can also be a viable option.
