It isn't always direct buffs which will affect a champion the most. Sometimes, simply changing something on an item could make a champion go haywire on Summoner's Rift. In LoL Patch 13.17 this happened to none other than Jarvan IV, who had his competition nerfed, while some of his own items have been buffed.

So, Riot is going to be making some changes in the upcoming LoL Patch 13.18 to make sure the jungler won't be a 100% presence champion at the 2023 League of Legends World Championship.

LoL Patch 13.18: Jarvan IV Nerfs Incoming

In the previous patch, Riot made some adjustments to Goredrinker, giving the item more health, meaning bruisers gain more survivability when they are playing. This isn't a bad thing in itself, but when you pair it with the changes to Spear of Shojin then you could create a monster... which Riot did.

According to stats page u.gg, Jarvan IV went from a pretty decent 51% win rate to almost 53% within one patch. While the champion himself was not buffed, the two items getting buffed meant that he would be the new go-to pick in the jungle.

The fact that Riot axed quite a few other meta junglers also helped Jarvan IV rise to the top, with less competition standing in his way, meaning he had an easy path to the number one spot.

With a core build of Goredrinker first, Boots of Lucidity for that sweet Ability Haste, and Spear of Shojin next, Jarvan IV was able to jump into any fight without a second thought. He had more health than before, easy survivability and could spam his abilities.

Well, now Riot is going to nerf him, as well as Spear of Shojin in the upcoming patch, meaning that we might not see him in every game at Worlds 2023, but he will likely continue to stay somewhat meta, thanks to his strong early game and ability to gank lanes, something which is crucial in the current state of the game.
