Jungle Diff, Top Gap, Bot Canyon, Mid Abyss, Support Chasm? This kind of toxic lingo has risen to a new height of popularity and common use within the past several years of League of Legends. The community seems to be trending towards toxicity; more so than normal. At least that’s what Riot’s Devs had to say in their ‘Game Update’ blog post earlier today.

“We've heard from you that verbal abuse has been a rising problem this year, too. We're working on a number of changes to systemically address this at both the League and Riot levels, but one direct change you'll see soon is that in patch 11.21

Riot Devs Meddler and Brightmoon delivered this statement on 10/12 in their post regarding all chat.

Updated 10/20/21

Why is Riot Removing All Chat in Patch 11.21?

Despite an immediate growing vocal backlash from the community following this announcement today, the gameplay devs at Riot say that this change was necessary to combat the growing problems of verbal abuse on the rift.

“End of Game chat will still be cross-team. Allies will still be able to coordinate with each other in team chat.”

Riot have kept the ability for teams to chat in the post-game screen, but it likely won't fulfill the desires of toxic players who take every opportunity to flame. After all, what’s the point of typing out a message if your opponent has already queued up their next game?

Is All Chat Gone from League of Legends Forever?

As of 10/20/21: Riot have confirmed that they will reconsider all chat depending upon region and several other factors.

“When the test ends, we may leave /all chat disabled, make changes to the disable, or turn it back on, on a per-region basis,” Riot said. “We may also make adjustments during the test itself based on initial results.”

All hope is not yet lost for these changes. As of now, the plan is for Riot to take a month and look at the data as well as feedback from the community. From there, they will make a decision on whether or not the feature will be re-added.

11.21 Patch Notes come with an update from Riot

Riot have recently spoke up on the upcoming removal of all chat in the 11.21 Patch Notes. As we predicted in our post earlier, they aren't going to pull the trigger quite yet on all chat. These changes will function as a test for now, with lots of options for the future.

“Since our original announcement, response has varied between regions, so we’re shifting our approach and only disabling /all chat where
players were most receptive to trying it out.”

Unfortunately, players have no information on which regions this will affect as of now. It's important to note though that they have kept all chat in custom games, luckily these changes won't affect your in-house games with friends!

“In regions where the disable rolls out, /all chat will still be available in custom games, and no other tools are being disabled,” Riot added. “We’ll evaluate the impact of this change through verbal abuse reports, penalty rates, surveys, and direct feedback.”

When is All Chat Being Removed?

As of now, the removal of all chat will occur in LoL Patch 11.21 on 10/20/21. This change is scheduled to last throughout two patches as of now, if you aren't caught up on Riot's patch schedule - that effectively means a month. The all chat changes may or may not be lifted on November 17th, when Patch 11.22 concludes.
