Song of Nunu: The Story
Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story follows the young human boy Nunu and his best friend, a giant Yeti named Willump, as they set off on an adventure through the Freljord. The Freljord will not only be the future stomping grounds of Nunu and Willump, but it's also the home of many popular LoL Champs, such as Ashe, Braum and Lissandra.
The story follows the start of the beautiful friendship between Nunu and Willump and follows them as they set off to find Nunu's lost mother.
In an interview with David Canela, Game Director at Tequila Works, the developers of Song of Nunu, he described the story as "[...] a road trip you are doing with your best friend." You travel around the unforgiving, freezing wastelands of the Freljord together with Willump, who acts as a "father or a protector to Nunu" according to David Canela.
Although Nunu has grown up in the Freljord where most are raised as warriors, in order to survive the harsh living conditions there, Nunu belongs to the nomadic Notai tribe, who do not believe in war. Instead, as the CEO and Creative Director of Tequila Works, Raúl Rubio, explains, Nunu was raised to believe in stories, not war since "you cannot kill a story, and you cannot kill a song."
On his fifth nameday, Nunu's mother Layka gave him a flute, so he could play the melodies that his mother played for him, himself. The magical flute, which Nunu named "Svellsongur" after a mighty blade that Nunu had imagined himself, will also play an important part in the game.
As the developers have already revealed, players will be able to use Nunu's flute to interact with elements in Nunu's environment, which will react to the flute's notes and sounds.
One of the most important aspects of the game will be the friendship between Nunu and Willump. We'll have plenty of chances to explore the emotional bond these two friends share.
Song of Nunu: Gameplay
We already know that Song of Nunu is going to be a story based single player adventure game. Unlike League of Legends, Song of Nunu will be played in a third-person, over the shoulder perspective. Trailers have already revealed the gorgeous, comic-like art style of the game.
From what we've seen so far and thanks to the tags on Steam, we also know that besides having to solve many different puzzles and overcome challenges with the help of our magical flute, Song of Nunu will offer plenty of room to explore the Freljord.
So far, the devs have mentioned that Nunu and Willump will be able to jump and climb around, and we've already seen footage of Nunu riding on Willump's back, while he slides down a mountain path.
Nunu and Willump will also have to take breaks in between solving puzzles to fight off enemies, such as the pack of wolves that we saw in the game's trailer.
Not only will our boys traverse different snow covered regions, with Nunu either riding on Willump's back, or Willump carrying Nunu, depending on the snow depth, but they also be able to do one more important thing: snowball fights! Since this is how their friendship came to blossom according to League of Legends lore, this aspect of the game feels very necessary.
Riot Forge have already given us a to-do list for Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story:
Now don't worry if you were hoping to see other Freljordians in this adventure, you will! As we've already seen in the trailer, Braum will accompany Nunu and Willump for a part of their adventure.
Braum won't be the only cameo, though. The official Song of Nunu website shows that another League of Legends champion will be included in our story, namely the leader of the Frostguard: Lissandra.
Steam's description of the game lets us believe that Lissandra may take the role of the antagonist in this game. Her dark magic might threaten to cover all of Freljord, so maybe Nunu and Willump will be slightly sidetracked while looking for Nunu's mother.
According to Steam, other champ cameos that we can expect are Ornn and Volibear, though these have not been confirmed on the official website yet.
Song of Nunu: Release Date, Platforms & Price
Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is set to release sometime in Fall 2023, according to Riot Forge, the publishers of the game.
That being said, Riot Forge did say in a tweet that "technically Fall goes until December 20th", so they may be waiting to release the game in December, which would be fitting for the game, since it takes place in the cold, icy Freljord.
Who wouldn't want to be able to traverse through snow planes with their Yeti best friend, all while be cuddled up in a warm blanket, sipping some hot cocoa.
The good news is, you'll be able to choose which platform you will play Song of Nunu on! Upon release, you can play Song of Nunu on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, the Xbox One and Xbox Series and on PC.
PC players will be able to purchase the game on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
At the moment, we don't know how much the game is going to cost, or what technical requirements your consoles will have to fulfill. Once we know more, we'll keep you updated!
