Hwei Getting Popular: Have People Finally Figured Out How To Play Him?

News 08-02-2024 16:59

Hwei is one of the more recent champions that have joined the League of Legends roster. He got released at the end of 2023 as a mid laner/support. While the champion has garnered a lot of interest regarding his highly complex kit he wasn't really popular to play. But the trend changes and people are finally picking up Hwei.

Hwei is a long range artillery mage with lots of tools at his disposal. He can control 3 magic schools that each have 3 different abilities. This opens up for a lot of skill expression and difficult but rewarding combos. Some players are looking for exactly that, flashy combos with lots of animations and big damage numbers as a reward. But some people don't want to put the effort in.

Hwei has recently become a decently popular champion. His release pick rate was very low even for a newer champion which led people to believe that either he was very weak, hard to play or his aesthetic just wasn't appealing. Now, in Patch 14.2 his pick rate has stabilized at around 5%

This makes him the 12th most picked mid laner in the game. He is almost the most popular mage in the game at this point. However, he is also picked in the support position, which grows his pick rate even higher. He is very terrible in the support role though, please don't pick it.

So what could be the reason that he is suddenly picked? He still has a pretty low win rate which means that he is definitely not picked because of his strengths, and he is also not a flashy mobile assassin like the more popular champions. He is slow but has a very long range. His pro play appearances are scarce, which only a few games in the LEC and LCK.

What do you think is the cause for Hwei's rising pick rate? Personally, I think the champion is incredibly fun. He is very versatile and engaging. After the games, I usually think about my skill usage and how I could improve in the next game. Playing team fights well is incredibly rewarding because of the huge area of effect damage you can dish out, or you can burst down isolated targets at a long range.
