They needed the stars to align, but now they are officially eliminated: Team Vitality can no longer make it to the 2023 LEC Season finals and will have to wait for next year to compete in professional League of Legends again. After Astralis, this makes them the second team to have their season ended prematurely.

While the outlook was not great, Vitality still had a good chance to make it to the season finals despite their elimination after the regular season. Thanks to a third place in spring split, they had enough championship points to be ahead of five other teams in the championship points standings.

However, the group stage could not have gone any worse for them, with the teams ahead of them failing to pass the group stage while three teams behind them qualified for the playoffs. Although they are still ranked in sixth place in the championship points standings, the winner of the playoffs lower bracket match between Team Heretics and Fnatic is guaranteed to surpass them.

One thing that has come back to haunt Vitality is the championship points distribution in the LEC. While winter and spring split are worth the same points, summer split awards teams with 50% more points. This means that even Excel Esports would overtake them despite two tenth-place finishes by simply reaching the summer finals.

Vitality fans were hopeful that they would still get a shot at the season finals, with Excel, Fnatic and Heretics way off their points tally and Astralis guaranteed to be eliminated after the regular season. However, with all three of those teams defying the likes of Mad Lions, Team BDS and KOI – all of which are placed ahead of Vitality in championship points – Vitality ended up having to pack their bags for a very long off-season.

The LEC summer playoffs start on Monday, 18:00 CEST (17:00 BST / 9:00 PST) with G2 Esports facing off against Excel Esports. If Excel wins this match, they qualify for the season finals and eliminate KOI by doing so.
