Just three months ago Riot revealed that they would be making some changes to League of Legends. While they are adding a new for-fun game mode in the form of TFT Double Up (but League), they're also going to be replacing the least popular queue with a new one – Quick Play.

There has not been much news since the announcement of Quick Play though, which had some fans wondering whether this mode, that is supposed to replace Blind Pick, is actually still coming in 2023.

LoL Quick Play: Bringing Back Team Builder

Quick Play is going to be a new League of Legends queue that is similar to a former mode called Team Builder. Riot removed Team Builder in 2016 due to there being issues maintaining multiple queues for different game modes. It also created longer queue times and negatively impacted matchmaking quality.

What Was LoL Team Builder?

Team Builder in League of Legends was a game mode that allowed players to select their desired role and champion before entering the matchmaking queue. It provided an alternative to the traditional blind pick and draft pick modes.

With Team Builder, players could choose the specific role they wanted to play, such as top lane, mid lane, jungle, bot lane, or support. They could also select the champion they preferred to play in that role. The system would then attempt to match players with complementary roles and champions to form a balanced team.

Quick Play Should Release In 2023

Quick Play is going to follow a similar concept, with players picking their role and champions before going into the queue and then getting matched up with other players who play the other four roles.

Initially, the mode was supposed to go live halfway through the year, according to Riot Auberaun on Reddit, but with the decision being made to introduce Emerald Tier, the project was put on hold until the new tier was added to ranked.

We were hoping to get Quick Play out before the midyear patch but weren't quite able to finish before we had to pivot to Emerald and other ranked Split 2 stuff, so we'll be picking it back up shortly and plan to get it out later this year.

Quick Play already had a few test runs on smaller League of Legends servers. At first there had been major queue issues with it, which Riot quickly fixed. Riot Auberaun also noted that after the initial set backs were adjusted the mode worked very well.

So, we can expect Quick Play to make an appearance in the later stages of the Season. Which roles and champions will be the most popular?
