Single, double, triple elimination... What will it be?
Worlds and MSI Format Will Change in 2023
We have all heard it at this point: Fans have gone on and on about the Worlds format being due for a change, and finally, Riot Games are listening to them. But are the upcoming changes enough?
Earlier this week, LoL Esports held a press conference concerning the League of Legends World Championship. During the press conference, Travis Gafford asked about LoL Esport's future plan regarding the Worlds and MSI format. To that, the Global Head of LoL Esports, Naz Aletaha, could announce that changes to the Worlds and MSI format would be coming for 2023.
"Yes, Format Changes Are Coming"
Riot getting complaints about the current format for the international stage is nothing new. The question was already asked last year, and the organizers for LoL Esports promised they would spend 2022 thinking about the issue.
Now, one year later, Naz Aletaha can finally announce that changes are coming for both MSI and Worlds. Before you get too excited, we are still uncertain which changes precisely we can expect in 2023. Naz clarified they would come back to us next year and explain more closely which changes are coming.

No Double Elimination in the Knockout Stage
I am sorry to disappoint some of you, but Riot Games continues insisting on single elimination for the Knockout Stage.
During the press conference, John Needham, the President of Esports at Riot Games, explained that, though they believe that "double elimination is great for qualifying the best teams" into the international tournaments, Worlds will not adopt the format for the knockout stage in the near future.
At the end of the day, Worlds is one of the biggest sporting events on the planet. All the biggest sporting events on the planet have single elimination as a core part of their tournament. And at least from Knockouts forward, we will continue with single elimination because that puts the stakes at the very highest level, and we believe that is important for a tournament as big and important as Worlds.

Fans Still Want Double-Elimination
Even though some fans were pleased about the news, several fans and big names from the LoL community shared their dissatisfaction.
Fans have been asking for quite a while for LoL to follow a similar format to Valorant. Valorant already adopted the double-elimination format in their Group Stage, so why cannot League of Legends do the same?
So what do you think about the current format?
