Is Riot Reworking Dr. Mundo Again?

Dr. Mundo was just reworked in 2021 and even though his win rate has improved, it seems that his play rate hasn't. He's been having an identity crisis since the rework and fans have been unhappy with a few features of his kit, to this day still trying to get used to it, which is why Riot is looking to make some changes.

While reworks should usually help champions, it seems that the Dr. Mundo rework hasn't landed as well as others. Volibear, Fiddlesticks... they've both become pretty meta well, so what is wrong with Dr. Mundo? That's what we will look at right now.

What Went Wrong With Dr. Mundo?

Many of his reworked abilities didn't feel as intuitive as his old ones and it has thrown players off, especially longtime Dr. Mundo mains who had gotten used to his abilities. That's why a lot of Dr. Mundo mains haven't felt excited to play the big man in the top lane.

According to the Riftfeeed champion statistics page, we can see that Dr. Mundo boasts a decent 51.5% win rate, but a mere pick rate of 0.7%. This just goes to show that even Dr. Mundo mains barely play him, but the ones who do actually manage to win their games.

What Changes Will Riot Implement?

So now that we see that there are some issues with Dr. Mundo currently, Riot has decided to listen to the community and will implement some adjustments and changes for the big man in the future as well. Riot Twin Enso sent out a Tweet with potential changes to Dr. Mundo's kit

The proposed changes are supposed to make Dr. Mundo stronger in the late game, though give him less AD in the early stages, which could impact his laning. But let's check out the changes before discussing just how heavily they will impact Mundo mains in the future.

Dr. Mundo AbilitiesProposed Changes for Dr. Mundo
Goes Where he Pleases (P)
  • Lose 7% current health, gain 8% max Health --> Lose 3% current health, gain 4% max health
  • Max Health regen: 0.8-1.6% max health per 5 seconds (linear progression) --> 0.5-2.25% (non-linear progression queals at roughly level 11)
Heart Zapper (W)
  • Always receive half of your Gray Health, reagless of Enemy Hit
Blunt Force Trauma (E)
  • Bonus AD: 15/20/25/30/35 + 25/30/35/40/45 based on missing health --> 4% max Health
  • [REMOVED] instantly kills small jungle monsters
  • Monster damage: 200% --> 250%
Maximum Dosage (R)
  • [Removed] Bonus AD
  • Missing Health as max health: 8/11.5/15% --> 15/20/25%

Dr. Mundo is going to have less AD, but he is going to have healthier HP scaling and HP regen with these proposed changes. The W will help him regain his health even without hitting an enemy which is a decent change, but it's the lack of AD that has some fans worried.

Some fans have stated that they would love some more changes to his W, since the zapper is mostly just being ignored by enemies at this point. One fan suggested adding a short stun into it when it explodes, while another fan just wants the ability to last a little longer.

The bonus AD being removed from his ultimate does feel bad though, since Mundo already struggles with AD, but it would be added into his E along with health scaling, meaning it would come on earlier for players. Will these changes really make Dr. Mundo popular again though?

If you're waiting for these Dr. Mundo changes, then you'll have to wait a bit longer since they won't ship with LoL Patch 12.15. As already mentioned, these are just some suggestions, so be prepared for a future patch to have some Mundo adjustments soon! Maybe, just in time for the 2022 League of Legends World Championship?
